Two early morning tweets caught my attention today:

Now, what do these tweets tells us? These are two men (the Tims) whom I respect and while these statements may have been made “on the fly,” I think there’s wisdom (or is it twisdom?) packed into both.

First off, Tim is addressing the conservative media darling, Glenn Beck, directly. If you’re not familiar with Beck, the gist of his arguments end with Glenn calling those who disagree with him “an idiot” or some derivative thereof. This is what Tim is a addressing and I think he’s spot on. I don’t know about you, but I’m not exactly “all ears” after someone insults my intelligence. Maybe it’s just me.

Secondly, we have another Tim addressing the tendency for right-leaning Christians to demonize (yes, demonize) President Obama. Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize recently and, apparently, there are some vocal believers in Jesus who believe this will summon the end-of-days. I fail to see the connection. But Tim says what a lot of us are thinking: “Please, dear Lord, let the loonies stay at home with this one. We don’t need another PR nightmare!” I hear the sting of embarrassment in Tim’s words and I’m right there with him.

What do both of these statements tell us? They tell us that Christ lovers and sick and tired of being pegged. We’re weary for being known as the “people who hate gays.” We’re weary of being known for what we’re against instead of what we’re for. We’re weary of being pegged as one particular political party, for sure, to the point where younger believers are picking the opposite party just to make a statement.

We’ve made the mistake of making the main thing (Jesus) not the main thing while making not the main thing (anything but Jesus) the main thing. A new breed seems to be rising that tells the world: “I am with Jesus. Identify me that way. Nothing else.”

So Tims, my hat goes off to you. Brilliant. Keep challenging the status quo. Keep letting the unpredictable Spirit breathe through you. Keep thinking differently.

  • I think Glenn Beck is funny and good for America... he does however go too far sometimes, but unfortunately I think he deals without a lot of crap from all sides and maybe the "idiot" thing was in response to something that we don't know about. I am in the business of giving people the benefit of the doubt these days, simply because I know I don't always handle myself perfectly and maybe if I sow some grace, I will reap some when it is most needed : )

The Obama and the peace prize... I think it is sad this turns political and as you said the media gets the right-winger christian speaker talker guy who says all the stuff the media loves to pump America with when representing the LAMO Christians of the world! Makes me sick like most reading and posting here... and the best we can do is say the opposite of the righties!!! But criticize away the fact that Obama got the award... I mean seriously, the voting ended 2 weeks after he got into office... they gave him the award because he talks a good game, thought he had the potential to do some good? But we all know what James says about the talkers... its all hot air unless there is some movement and progress that follows all the talking! I would love to see progress in the world of peace and really don't care who get the credit or the job done... but peace is not something Obama will be able to accomplish, because the world doesn't want peace with the US, and he thinks the way to everyones heart is eating crow for all of america's mistakes in foreign policy of the last 40 years... what an id.......not gonna do it : )

I think the award should be going to organizations like Charity:Water who drill wells and deliver real hope and peace to villages in Africa who do not have clean water to drink or cook with... when Charity:Water is finished and leaves that village, they are "hooker up" with fresh daily water and less likely to die because of the diseases in the water they were forced to use! That action is worth a Nobel Peace Prize over someone who talks a good game any day of the week!
    Peace
    Tony

I'd like to go even further with the "idiot" thing-- as a Christian, my experience with other Christians is that they start off an argument/debate/conversation offended before they even hear my point. With other people, I do not experience that nearly as often. But as soon as I say something positive about something James Dobson disapproves of, many Christians automatically discredit me as "far removed from the center of the fold" (I really have heard that). We should, as Christians, AT LEAST match the rest of the world's level of acceptance of people, and truly should be the examples of grace to everyone else.
  • Will Chadwick
Justin, this is Will Chadwick. I know and love you, man, and you know me.

I think Pres. Obama receiving the Nobel Peace Prize isn't a sign that he's the Anti-Christ. It just shows how out of whack the world's beliefs are... He hasn't accomplished anything in the last 8 months except for showing the rest of the world that he's sorry that we are America, and that he has spent tons and tons of $$$ in 8 months for little to none of the promised "CHANGE".

and i for one am sick and tired of being labeled as a republican because i love Jesus. and i am sick and tired of young, theologically weak, and sometimes immature Christians, and the often ideologically wrong "Emergent Church movement" in America leaning left and seemingly always voting democrat.

Just because you disagree with some of the WHAT and much of the HOW the RIGHT does things, doesn't mean that you should swallow hook, line, and sinker the terrible and often humanist WHAT that the LEFT offers. I meet so many young post-modern "spiritual but non-religious" "emergent" Christians that preach that all you need is love and to be open-minded and understanding, but don't know anything about the Character of God, don't live a lifestyle of a "Christian" (a Christ-follower or a 'little Christ'), and who are so angry at CHRISTIANITY because of what they have seen the often ineffective, biased, and often divided church institutions in this country do, and the what they have seen the extremists right-winger evangelicals do. They are soooooooo eager to throw out those two groups, unfortunately they often throw away the Bible, the Biblical view of the ALMIGHTY GOD, the HOLY SPIRIT, and the Biblical JESUS out too...

I am an independent. politically i am a conservative. i am a follower of Jesus who after some stupid church politics and happenings (some of which are my fault), i left a corrupt liberal mainline denomination to go work for the Salvation Army... i love the Salvation Army because they "get it" (unlike these two you have quoted above) We hold on to BIBLICAL TRUTHS, and yet we serve suffering humanity daily... often those that many other churches won't even acknowledge, see, or talk to. Many Salvationist Christians see that that JESUS was a LIBERAL and a CONSERVATIVE. NEED PROOF? CONSERVATIVE: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your mind, and with all your strength" (we all need to be personally accountable for the things we say, do, think, and believe in. Personal conviction and accountability, taking responsibility for your relationships.) LIBERAL: "and the second commandment is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself." (being accountable for loving all of humanity around you, for taking care of the needs of others.)

The "Post-modern-lovey-dovey-hippie-Emergent-movement" needs to check itself and ultimately its inspiration. SO DOES THE TRADITIONAL CHURCH, BOTH CONSERVATIVE AND LIBERAL. and Christians on BOTH SIDES OF THE POLITICAL AISLE need to pull their heads out of their rectums, think, surrender every thought to God, give God His place as Sovereign in their hearts & minds, pray for this world, follow Jesus, and quit making little, angry, self-promoting, self-motivated remarks that make both sides of the unbelievers in this world judge Jesus and the Church universal.

I think that as people call each other "idiot" in the course of arguments, it just points out where they do not have anything to back up their point of view, and so turn to attacking their opponent. Rather than reflecting on me, I feel that it show that the person I'm talking to has no interest in any viewpoint other than their own and has closed their minds and hearts to anyone who disagrees. But I suppose having an open mind and heart is not so great for ANY of the political talk shows' ratings.

As for Obama winning the Nobel Prize - what we should all be asking ourselves is whether the past year was so bad for the peace of the world that the committee thought "potential" beat out any real accomplishments? And again, the loonies' reactions are far more entertaining and sellable than the more subdued reactions. (Easier to get, too, thanks to press releases from several of them!)
  • Well unfortunately, we "tired" of it but there's not much we can do about it. Why do so many people have the impression that Christ followers are a bunch of "crazy right wingers"? Because that's who the media goes to for quotes. They won't go to Andy Stanley, Rick Warren, Rob Bell or James MacDonald to ask what they think about President Obama winning the award. They'll go to James Dobson or somebody at the American Family Association or people who while holding the same biblical viewpoints as Bell, MacDonald, Stanley and Warren (Really, there isn't much difference between all of them from a theological standpoint) but just get overbearing when it comes to discussing politics.

That being said, there's nothing wrong with criticizing the selection of President Obama to win the Nobel Peace Prize. The man has been in office for a mere 9 months. He hasn't accomplished anything on the world stage that merits a Nobel Peace Prize.
  • Amen on going to the nutjobs. How do we live such compelling lives as Christians that going to the nutjobs is not only seen as unfair, but everyone sees right through it. What if people knew Christians who lived such light-filled lives that the nutjobs just kind of faded into the murky background?

And as for Obama getting the Nobel, you're right–questioning that decision is completely acceptable. My thought is, even if you don't think it's merited, why use this as a chance to peddle insane religious beliefs, e.g. Obama = antichrist?

As I agree that calling people "idiots" is not polite...but if the shoe fits...?
As for calling Obama the anti-Christ, those of us who understand scripture,
…and I am the least of my fellow man to claim I understand most of what the bible says...
I do know that Obama CAN'T be the anti-Christ. How?
    The bible tells me so.
    But common sense tells me...
that Obama IS NOT good for men of faith and values.
